Albendazole is an oral broad spectrum anthelmintic drug discovered by the SmithKline's scientists in 1972. It is benzimidazole carbamate derivative of white to off-white color, soluble in dimethylsulfoxide, strong acids. It is slightly soluble in methanol, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and acetonitrile and is practically insoluble in water. Albendazole causes irreversible disturbance of glucose utilization and inhibits ATP synthesis in the body of parasite leading to its death.

Albendazole is effective against majority of intestinal nematosis and even larval forms of helminths. Perhaps today there is no antiparasitic drug with such a wide spectrum of action, although the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drug only for the treatment of cysticercosis and hydatid disease.
Albendazole is sold in the US under brand name Albenza and only with your doctor's prescription. Each tablet of Albenza contains 200 mg of albendazole. It is also available in other countries as Eskazole, Zentel, Andazol, Alworm etc.
The drug was mentioned in "House M.D." series when a patient needs to get rid of worms penetrated the brain.
Albendazole for Ascariasis: Works fairly well when taken for 20+ days, and prescription is repeated at least a few times in close succession to reach all life cycles and those pockets which have poor circulation. According to the NIH coinfection is much more common than non-coinfection, perhaps this is the reason such a broadbased anthelmintic has so many success stories.
Albendazole like other benzimidazole carbamates disrupts microtubule function of cell units causing damage of tubulin protein. This result is a biochemical abnormalities in the cell - inhibition of glucose transport which underlies the suppression of cellular division in metaphase and which is associated with inhibition of oviposition and larval development of worms. It significantly surpasses mebendazole and praziquantel both in performance and breadth of the spectrum of action.
Albendazole is characterized by low absolute absorption. During absorption it transforms in albendazole sulfodoksid, which is present in plasma and tissues in high concentrations. This fact provides a high efficacy of this drug.
I took it for a microsporidiosis of the eyes, and it works very-strongly. It was well-absorbed by the stomach. The burnings and discomforts of the eyes went away, after just one dose. This is a good medicine.
Efficacy of albendazole against most intestinal and tissue nematodes and cestodes was established during numerous experiments and clinical trials. Therapeutic doses were well below toxic doses. It was possible to recommend it for practical application. The clinical trials have confirmed the high efficacy and good tolerability.
Enterobiasis, hookworm and necatoriasis, hymenolepiasis, taeniasis, strongyloidiasis, ascariasis, trichinosis, Clonorchiasis, cutaneous larva migrans, giardiasis in children.
Pathogen is roundworm Ascaris lumbricoides, a parasite in the human small intestine. Difficulties in treating this helminthiasis due to the fact that the parasite makes a rather complex cycle of development in the human body, including helminth larvae migrate through the body. Most drugs used for the treatment of ascariasis are only effective against intestinal helminthiasis this stage.
Albendazole is effective against all stages of development of the parasite.
Albendazole is administered in single of 400 mg once a day or in 2 hours after a meal. Special preparation and diet is not required. Efficiency is 95-100%.
Pathogen is Trichocephalus trichiurus - roundworm, parasitic in the large intestine of man mainly in the area of the cecum.
It is the most effective drug for the treatment of trichuriasis.
The drug is administered in single dose of 400 mg once a day after meal. Special preparation and diet is not required. Efficiency reaches 90%. In rare cases second course of treatment is required.
The pathogen is roundworm Enterobius vermicularis. It parasitize humans in the lower and upper sections of the thin colon.
Albendazole is an excellent drug for the treatment of pinworms. Sufficient single reception of the drug at a dose of 5 mg/kg of body weight. Special preparation and diet is not required. After 14 days the treatment must be repeated at the same dose and in the same mode. Efficiency is 100%.
Pathogens of this disease are roundworm Anculostoma duodenale and Necator americanus. Helminth parasites in the duodenum and upper part of the small intestine. Infection occurs through the skin, rearly through the mouth if swallowed larvae. These invasions may develop iron deficiency anemia.
Albenza is highly effective for the treatment of hookworm. Doses are the same as in the treatment of strongyloidiasis. Efficiency of the one-day treatment is 85%, and it rises if the course is 2-3 days.
The pathogen is round worm Strongiloides strcoralis, a parasite living in the small intestine. The disease is common in areas with warm and humid climate. The infection occurs through contact with soil: during work in the garden, walking barefoot on the ground, on the beach. In the body, the larvae migrate through the blood and lymphatic vessels, and then settle in the upper small intestine and grow to adults. Adult worms postpone eggs that hatch into larvae in the intestine. These larvae can migrate throughout the body, causing a variety of symptoms of allergies. If the patient has disturbed immunity, migration could last for a long time, the number of migrating larvae increases. All this can cause severe damage to many organs and systems. Especially hard strongyloidiasis occurs in AIDS patients and in those receiving immunosuppressive drugs for a long time. In these cases, the common strongyloidiasis can be fatal.
The reatment of strongyloidiasis is a difficult task. With the emergence of albendazole the situation has changed. Effectiveness of the drug for the treatment of strongyloidiasis is 91-100%
The drug is administered at a dose of 10 mg / kg of body weight once a day for 3 days. A week later, it is recommended to repeat the cycle of treatment at the same doses. Special preparation and diet is not required.
